Amazing Heart Slide
The Amazing Heart Slide is a long-standing exhibit at the BFK. It’s a large, anatomically inspired slide that children can physically climb through and slide down, learning about the human heart in a playful, immersive way. The exhibit is designed to teach:
- Anatomy: Children learn the shape and structure of the human heart.
- Motor Skills: Climbing and sliding support gross motor development.
- Social Skills: Kids practice taking turns and interacting with peers.
History
The Amazing Heart Slide has been a beloved highlight of our museum since it first opened in 1994. Designed by cardiologist and founding supporter Dr. John Mielke in collaboration with a local artist from Lawrence University, the exhibit was created to spark curiosity and learning by turning heart anatomy into a hands-on adventure.
Dr. Mielke’s vision was rooted in his passion for early childhood education and community health. His legacy continues through the Bold Hearts Legacy Circle, which honors long-time supporters like him and his wife, Sally Mielke.
