Indoor Discovery Classes

Indoor Classes for the 2020/21 school year:

These classes will undergo some minor changes to make them easier to take on the road.

Being a Scientist, grades: 4K-1

Students will learn about scientists and use their five senses to identify scents, tastes, experiment with color, and make observations.  The class finishes with a sensational experiment.

Objectives: Students will…

  • Learn about scientists and what they do.
  • Identify their 5 senses* and use them to collect information (data).

*This class explores the 5 senses, including taste. Though we try to keep all our taste samples allergy free, we cannot guarantee the samples. If your student has food allergies or sensitivities, please let your BFK teacher know so we can adjust as needed!


WEMLS: Cognition & General Knowledge: A.EL.1 (Uses multi-sensory abilities to process information)

Art of Collage, grades: K-1 & 2-3 (class will be adjusted based on grade level)

We’ll look at different storybook artists and the ways they use collage to help tell their stories. After students look at examples, they will create their own masterpiece!

Objectives:  Students will…

  • Be introduced to children’s authors/illustrators and how they use collage in their books.
  • Learn about the different types of media used in collage.
  • Create a collage using the techniques learned in class.

Coding with Ozobots, grades: K-3, (class will be adjusted based on grade levels) 

Be creative and learn about coding with Ozobots, our tiny coding robots!  Students will learn some coding basics and use colors, lines and patterns to design paths for their robots.

Objectives:  Students will…

  • Learn how lines, colors and patterns give Ozobots directions.
  • Work together to create a coded maze for their Ozobot.

What’s the Weather, grades: K-3

Through different weather stations, students will discover how weather affects their everyday lives and how different factors create weather. They will create a wind streamer, make a cloud in a jar and build a small structure to reduce sun exposure for a small toy animal.

Objectives: Students will learn…

  • Weather is a combination of many factors that affect our daily lives and throughout the year.
  • Meteorologists use different tools to collect weather data. Students will use or make models of some of these tools.
  • How the Sun affects different areas of the Earth’s surface. Students will read a thermometer to take the temperature of sand, soil and water.
  • About the conditions needed for clouds to form and characteristics of the major types of clouds.

Forces & Simple Machines, grades: K-1 & 2-3 (class will be adjusted based on grade levels.)

Students will learn about force, work and simple machines.  They will experiment with how objects move and team up to build an invention.

Objectives: Students will…

  • Learn about forces, work and simple machines.
  • Identify some simple machines and how they make work easier.
  • Construct an invention that moves an object and uses simple machines.
  • Demonstrate and communicate to the group how their invention works.

Magnificent Matter

Grades: 1-4

Description: Students will investigate the three states of matter by participating in multiple experiments.  They will explore polymers, make carbon dioxide gas and dip into a crazy colloid!

Objectives:  Students will…

  • Identify and describe the 3 states of matter
  • Conduct experiments to observe how the states of  matter interact
  • Learn about polymers and be introduced to three different examples
  • Interact with a colloid and learn how it behaves

Where in the World, grades: 1-3

Students will learn about different types of maps and use an atlas to explore the continents and diverse features found on maps.  They will then create maps that represent the uniqueness of each continent.

Objectives: Students will…

  • Use an atlas to gather information and identify the different features of maps.
  • Identify the seven continents and compare and contrast some of their unique qualities.
  • Communicate to the whole group some qualities specific to the continent studied.
